I was born and raised in East Tennessee, you may think I talk funny, but in reality, it is y'all that talk funny, because East Tennessee is God’s Country! And that’s enough about that.
I grew up in a Christian home with a wonderful mom, dad and younger (but oh so much smarter) brother and the whole family was active in Baptist church and life. I was saved and baptized when I was 13 years old at an old fashioned revival at my home church. I even went to Carson-Newman College; a small, private Southern Baptist Convention affiliated college in Jefferson City, TN.
Even though Carson-Newman was an SBC school, I managed to drift away from God and his will for my life. But then I met my bride to be, Leslie, my junior year and with her help and God’s grace I began slowly to find my way back into God’s will. Leslie and I were married in May 1995 and began building our life together in Nashville, TN. I worked as an environmental chemist in lab while Leslie worked toward her Masters in Occupational Therapy at Belmont University.
In the spring of 1999 we felt God calling us to Roanoke, VA. Leslie was working in the NICU/PICU at RMH and I began work with a state environmental agency. We landed at Villa Heights Baptist Church in November of 1999 and have been here since. We fell in love with our church family. Leslie became active in the Children’s program and I began teaching a Sunday School class.
We both had secular jobs and were doing well in our careers. Leslie had finished her Occupation Therapy Doctorate and I was climbing the ladder with the state. God blessed us with Eli in 2002. Life was good, but I began getting the feeling I was not doing enough, but did not feel called to full time service. I began using my God given gifts of administration and leadership as a volunteer church administrator in April 2004. This volunteer service was going well, stressful and time consuming, but going well. Then in June 2006, God blessed us with Ethan, our second son. The full time job, family life and volunteer service became too much for me to handle. I fought it for a while and would win a battle here and there but eventually lost the war… God was telling me something had to give.
In the winter of 2008 – 2009 God really began working in my life, and in the Church. To make a long story short, God called me and the church into action together and in April 2009 I began work as the full time Minister of Administration & Education at Villa Heights Baptist Church.
In April 2010 God gave Leslie and me another little bundle of joy we named Davis. Leslie has quit work (for the time being… I hope…) to raise our boys. She absolutely loves being one of the most educated stay at home moms in the valley, and she does great at it! I can only trust that God knows what he is doing by putting me and my family where he has, because it makes no sense to me… and between me and my three sons… Villa Heights Baptist Church may never be the same.
Jeremiah 29:11-12 "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you."
